So, my Uncle Richard and Uncle José are getting married in the 33rd year of their relationship. They were waiting for their marriage to be legal in both of the states they reside in—Massachusetts and Maryland—and so the second it became law that they could do so, they set a date (my grandparents’ anniversary) and asked me to preside over the ceremony. I got ordained on the internet, and my certificate of ordination came in the mail today.

This is maybe the nicest compliment I’ve ever received and the most nervous I’ve ever been to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. I keep making jokes that I’ll start swapping language in the middle of the ceremony to throw ‘em a curve ball and all but EEEE.

(In other news guys I’m now ordained so if you want a Rock n’ Roll Priestess to preside over your nuptials hollerrrrrr)

Keep working. Even if it feels like honest, hard work and tenacity and enthusiasm and creativity aren’t worth anything anymore, even when they’re combined together in a seemingly invincible hybrid. Even if it feels like you are sending resumes to the moon, and that if you go on one more second/third/final interview for a job you could do in your sleep without it resulting in an offer you’ll crumble into yourself as if a black hole were opening up somewhere in between your sternum and your belly button. Even if you get an edit back from an editor that’s completely bloody with red ink but you see a typo-ridden post go up on said editor’s website. Even if your conversations at drinks with friends and colleagues are censored, because you’re all in the same boat now with everyone getting laid off and you’re all getting less yeses and more noes with every passing pitch and the jokes about this being a self-cannibalistic industry aren’t that funny because they’re not jokes anymore. Even if it feels like you’re going down with the ship.

Keep working. Because you have to, and you will be the better for it, and it is on you to pitch pieces that are impossible to refuse, and there’s a reason why you’ve been able to earn your ink, and if you were going to quit you never would’ve had the guts to move here in the first place.

Charles took us to church last night, and we went to Paris Blues on Adam Clayton Boulevard for High Lifes afterwards. Sat on the makeshift patio on the sidewalk, drank marked-up cheap beer, talked about what we just saw, talked about Austin, talked about Boston, talked about home, talked about what to do with a massive vinyl collection when you’re in between apartments, talked about our jobs and the perpetual uncertainty that comes with them, talked about gratitude, talked about whether or not we should take a cab or the subway back to Brooklyn and how long either would take because we weren’t sure if the train had switched to all local stops yet, talked about how we were so happy to be there for that show, talked about getting drunk and going home.

I really, really needed that. And goddamn Charles Bradley’s got a beautiful heart.
